At the end of September 2005, in the former monastery, Zisterzienserinnenkloster
in Cedynia, Poland, a new hotel and restaurant was opened. The renovation work
lasted more than seven years. The developer wanted to recreate as accurately as
possible the original atmosphere of the monastery but, at the same time, using
high-tech products.
The main desire of the developer was the construction of a property that would
amaze visitors with its tranquillity as well as its natural surroundings and
interior décor. In the public areas, for example, there is no background music.
In addition, the developer wanted to offer the guests accommodation in a place
that is ecological and, at the same time, luxurious. That also required, for
the parquet flooring, the use of environment-compatible products that also
protect so that the flooring could withstand the intensive daily traffic.
In the replacement of the flooring, they decided on oak parquet; in the hotel
rooms, traditional stab parquet was installed and, in the restaurant areas,
wood plank with grooved joints.
There was a great problem in the selection of an appropriate product for the
finishing treatment of the wood surface. At first, the customer had the
intention of using a solvent-based lacquer system in line with the prevailing
opinion that only such a surface treatment could withstand the heavy wear
loading. However, this technology contradicted the ecological nature of the
project.

The low-solvent, 2-component parquet oil, Magic Oil 2K from Pallmann, is a combination of
natural linseed oil and liquid hard wax and, due to the added hardener
component, is very rapid-drying.

The use of Magic Oil 2K from Pallmann
And so the developer decided to use the natural oil-wax system, Pallmann Magic
Oil 2K. In accordance with the test certification, Giscode Ö20, it is
low-solvent. The 2-component parquet oil consists of a combination of natural
linseed oil with liquid hard wax and, due to the added hardener component, it
is very rapid-drying - the impregnated wood flooring dries overnight and can be
opened to traffic again the following day.
At the same time, the product is very economical with oil consumption being
between 25 and 50 ml/m˛, depending on the type of wood. The high, cross-linked
density of the oil after setting and drying gives a water- and dirt- repellent
surface that cannot be achieved with 1-component parquet oils. Dirt removal is
comparable with maintenance work on lacquered parquet.
It is also significant that the product can be used on surfaces that, like
throughout this project, are equipped with warm water underfloor heating.
| In addition to its appearance, the
surfaces treated with the oil-wax combination have a positive influence on the
room atmosphere: the parquet can take in and give off humidity unhindered.
|

|
An added advantage is the possibility to add various colours with no loss of
guarantee. The developer deliberated over the choice of colours for a long
time. The decision was for a mixture of nut-brown, transparent and black in the
ratio 1 nut-brown, 1 black and 2 transparent. After applying this colour
combination, a natural and rustic appearance of the floor surface was achieved,
on which a small amount of contamination goes unnoticed.
The customer was delighted with the effect of the matt, natural tone. Unlike
lacquer, the oil-wax system does not form a seal-coat so that the open surface,
the natural colour and the structure of the wood are enhanced. The oil content
protects against the undesirable effects of other liquids on the surface. In
addition to appearance, the open surface has a positive influence on the room
atmosphere. The parquet can take in and give off humidity unhindered.

|
Prior to treatment, the parquet must be
carefully sanded as, especially with oiled wood flooring, the demands on
surface finish quality are very high. In four processes, the surface is sanded
first with Pallmann grit-papers in grades 36 and 60 and then, following
application of Pallmann Joint Seal Solution, finely sanded with grades 100 and
120. |
|
| In the former monastery in Cedynia in Poland there is
now a new hotel and restaurant. For sealing the parquet flooring, Magic Oil 2K was used - an environment-conscious
product that can also withstand the daily wear. |
Oil Treatment of the Parquet
Prior to treatment, the parquet must be carefully sanded as the quality of
surface preparation contributed significantly to the success of the
impregnation. Sanding is carried out in two stages, initially across the grain
with grade 36 paper and then along the length of the grain using grade 60
paper. Sanding the edges is completed last. After the first sanding, the floor
joints are filled with two trowel-applications of Pallmann Joint Seal Solution. With this product, the
joints between the individual parquet boards or slats are sealed. The last
sanding is carried out with the Cobra sanding machine using grade 100 paper and
the final finishing is with the single-disc machine from Wolff using the 120
sanding-grid.
|
Initially, the surfaces are polished using the Tango single disc machine from
Wolff with a green pad, to remove any excess material. Then the surface is
polished using a white pad. The second coat of oil is applied in the same way. |

|
Prior to the impregnation treatment, Magic Oil Care is mixed in the appropriate
colours of nut-brown, black and transparent. Shortly before application, the
mixture is combined with the hardener component and is then evenly distributed
by trowel across the annular ring grain of the wood. After approx. 20 minutes,
buffing of the surface commences with the Tango machine with a green pad to
remove any excess material. Then the surface is polished with a white pad.
Following the same procedure, the second coat of oil is applied.
For effective protection against soiling, an initial treatment and then regular
maintenance of the wood flooring with the matching care product, Magic Oil
Care, are necessary. The initial treatment is applied neat and, for ongoing
maintenance cleaning, the care product can be diluted with water.
|

|
The customer was very pleased with the effect of the matt, natural tone. With Magic Oil 2K, the colour and structure of wood
parquet and boards are especially enhanced. Also, it protects the flooring as
the oil forms a water- and dirt- repellent surface. |
Maintenance effort is minimal - comparable with that for lacquered flooring. It
is sufficient to remove dirt and dust using a mop, soft broom or vacuum
cleaner. Then the care product, diluted with water, can be easily applied as a
damp-wipe. The resulting film protects the oiled flooring and maintains its
appearance and wear life. In addition, the care product is slip-resistant.
Installation Company SEBA from Stettin
Installation of the parquet and the finishing treatment of the surface was
carried out by the company SEBA from Stettin. All work connected with the
subfloor preparation, laying out the parquet, installation and final finishing
took more than four months. SEBA was founded in 1989 and has six employees. Its
main activities are in surface preparation for parquet flooring, parquet
installation and the sale of a wide range of parquet materials. Their work is
mainly in the Westpommern-Woiwodschaft region. Reference projects include,
among others, Carrfur Supermarkets, the Polish Theatre and the Customs Office
in Stettin.
